Philadelphia singer-songwriter Amos Lee was a schoolteacher before Blue Note Records signed him, and his self-titled 2005 debut showed why the legendary jazz label took a chance on him. Produced by Lee Alexander, best known as Norah Jones' bassist and songwriting partner, the album pairs Lee's rich, soulful voice with spare, acoustic arrangements that leave plenty of room to breathe.
The songs draw on folk, soul, gospel and country blues in equal measure. "Keep It Loose, Keep It Tight" opens with an easy groove, "Arms Of A Woman" is a fan favourite at his live shows, and "Seen It All Before", "Colors" and "Black River" show a writer with a gift for honest, unhurried storytelling. It remains one of the warmest singer-songwriter debuts of its decade.
A quiet, soulful record made for late evenings and close listening, and a welcome addition to any folk or Americana shelf.
