Fruit Bats made Tripper in 2011 as a deliberate turn inward, with Eric D. Johnson trading the knotted guitars of The Ruminant Band for synthesizers, keyboard loops and atmospheric washes of sound. Working closely with producer Thom Monahan, Johnson stacked overdubbed harmonies onto pump organ, found sounds, acoustic guitar and a haze of bleeps and bloops, yet the pop hooks never disappear underneath. Songs like "Tangie and Ray" and "You're Too Weird" still shine through their heavy wrapping paper.
This deluxe ten year anniversary reissue presses the album on white vinyl and adds a bonus 7" on sea glass blue vinyl carrying two demos from the original sessions, alongside re-envisioned jacket art. A download card includes the twelve minute ambient jam that inspired "The Fen." It is the fullest version of the record yet assembled, and a natural pick for anyone building out a Fruit Bats shelf.
