Reflections is Sufjan Stevens writing for two pianos and nothing else. It grew out of his sixth collaboration with choreographer Justin Peck, composed for the Houston Ballet world premiere in May 2019 and recorded at Oktaven Studios by Ryan Streber with pianists Timo Andres and Conor Hanick.
Stripped of vocals, electronics and studio layering, what remains is the melodic instinct that runs through everything Stevens does. The seven pieces move from the bright, rolling opening of Ekstasis to the long unspooling of Rodinia, and the two pianists trade phrases closely enough that the parts often blur into one instrument. The closing piece carries the longest and funniest title he has written, and plays it entirely straight.
Music written to be danced to that works just as well sitting still. Pressed on turquoise color vinyl.
