Bill Withers grew up in a Raleigh County coal town in West Virginia, stuttering until he was 28. "My family didn't have a refrigerator, and the people across the street didn't have a phone," he remembered. "So we helped each other. They gave us ice, and we let them use our phone." Years later, homesick in Los Angeles and newly able to afford a Wurlitzer electric piano, he ran his fingers across the keys until a phrase surfaced: lean on me. He wasn't a pianist and didn't know the keyboard — he just liked how the chords sounded, like the hymns he'd grown up on.

That song topped the pop chart for three weeks in 1972 and is one of only nine ever to reach number one for two different artists. It anchors these sixteen tracks alongside "Ain't No Sunshine," "Use Me," "Grandma's Hands," and "Lovely Day."
