Radio Music Society was Esperanza Spalding's answer to a simple question: what would jazz sound like if it were written for the radio? Released in 2012, it won the Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album and pushed her writing toward horn-driven soul, funk and pop structures without giving up the harmonic detail of her earlier records.
The songs carry real weight. Black Gold is a message to young Black listeners about self-worth, Land Of The Free takes on wrongful imprisonment, and Endangered Species reworks a Wayne Shorter piece with Shorter himself on saxophone. Alongside them sit her reading of Michael Jackson's I Can't Help It and the closing hometown tribute City Of Roses. Her bass playing anchors everything, but the arrangements, all hers, are what make the album stick.
This is the 10th anniversary vinyl reissue, remastered from the original recordings.
