Released in 1995, The Bends is the record where Radiohead found their voice. Produced by John Leckie, Radiohead's second album swapped the grunge-leaning sound of their debut for something richer and more emotionally direct, with layered guitars, haunting melodies and Thom Yorke's vocals soaring over themes of alienation and disillusionment.
The run of songs is remarkable. Fake Plastic Trees is a slow-building, heart-on-sleeve ballad, High and Dry became one of their most enduring singles, and Just throws out one of the band's most frantic guitar riffs. Street Spirit (Fade Out) closes the album on a dark, hypnotic note that still ranks among the finest songs they have written. Many fans argue this is their best album, and it is easy to hear why.
This XL Recordings reissue is pressed on 180g vinyl. A cornerstone of nineties British guitar music and an essential piece of any Radiohead collection.
