This Old Dog, from 2017, is the album where Mac DeMarco slowed down and looked inward. Written around his move from New York to Los Angeles and released on Captured Tracks, it trades much of his signature wobbly electric guitar for acoustic strumming, vintage drum machines and soft synths.
The emotional thread running through the record is his relationship with his estranged father. "My Old Man" opens the album with Mac noticing his dad's face in the mirror, and the seven-minute "Watching Him Fade Away" closes it on a quietly devastating note. In between, the title track and "One Another" offer some of the warmest melodies he has written, while "On the Level" glides on a bed of synth and soft funk.
It remains the most personal album in his catalogue, and a favourite among fans who like his songs best when they are stripped back and honest.
