Mac DeMarco made Another One in 2015, in the short breaks between tours that followed Salad Days. Released on Captured Tracks as an eight-song mini album, it was written and recorded quickly at his home in Far Rockaway, Queens, and it plays like a set of love songs sketched out in a single sitting.
Every track circles romance from a different angle: jealousy, longing, heartbreak and quiet devotion. The sound is Mac at his most refined, with woozy chorus-soaked guitar, soft keyboards and that easy, crooning voice. "The Way You'd Love Her" opens with one of his catchiest hooks, and "No Other Heart" and "A Heart Like Hers" are among his sweetest ballads.
The closer, the instrumental "My House by the Water," ends with Mac reading out his home address and inviting listeners over for a cup of coffee. Short, charming and full of melody, it is an easy record to flip over and play again.
