2 is the first full-length album from Mac DeMarco, released on Captured Tracks in October 2012 and recorded largely by Mac himself in his Montreal apartment. It is the record that turned a cult favourite into one of the defining voices of 2010s indie rock.
All the hallmarks start here: jangly, slightly detuned guitars, lazy grooves, and lyrics that pair a goofy grin with real tenderness. "Ode to Viceroy" is a woozy love letter to his cigarette brand of choice, "Freaking Out the Neighborhood" is an apology to his mother for his wilder antics, and "Cooking Up Something Good" paints a funny, sharp portrait of suburban family life. "Still Together" closes things on a soft falsetto ballad that became a fan favourite at his live shows.
Eleven songs in about half an hour, it is a breezy, endlessly replayable record and the ideal starting point for his catalogue.
