Barenaked Ladies spent the nineties being underestimated because they were funny. This collection is a reminder that the songwriting underneath the jokes was consistently excellent. One Week made them inescapable in 1998, but If I Had $1000000, Brian Wilson, Pinch Me and Call And Answer show a band with real melodic range and an unusual gift for vocal arrangement. Ed Robertson and Steven Page traded lead vocals in a way few bands manage without one voice dominating, and the live reputation they built in Canada came from those harmonies rather than the punchlines. For anyone who only knows the singles from radio, hearing them sequenced together makes the case. A straightforward, well priced vinyl entry point into a catalog worth exploring further.
