The Car, from 2022, is the seventh Arctic Monkeys album and the one where the lounge orchestra fully takes over. Alex Turner wrote ten songs, James Ford produced, and the sessions moved between Butley Priory in Suffolk, RAK in London and La Frette outside Paris. Where Tranquility Base built a hotel on the moon, this record comes back to earth: strings swell and recede, the rhythm section stays loose and funky, and Turner turns in some of the richest vocal performances of his career on "There'd Better Be A Mirrorball" and "Body Paint." It asks for a proper sit-down listen rather than a shuffle, and it pays that attention back. A strong record for anyone who followed the band past the guitars.
