This Year's Model, from 1978, is the first Elvis Costello album made with the Attractions, and the difference is immediate. Where his debut was cut with a borrowed band, this one has Steve Nieve's carnival organ, Bruce Thomas's restless bass and Pete Thomas's drumming pushing every song faster and harder, with Nick Lowe producing in his lean, no-frills style.
The songs are sharp and nervy: "Pump It Up" is built on one unrelenting riff, "(I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea" and "Lipstick Vogue" are all tension, and "No Action" launches the record at a sprint. Many rank it as the best album of his career.
This 2021 UMe reissue is newly remastered on 180-gram black vinyl, and it adds "Big Tears" and "Radio, Radio" to the end of the second side, the latter the song he famously switched to live on Saturday Night Live. A cornerstone of new wave on vinyl.
