Damien Jurado & Richard Swift - Other People's Songs Vol. 1 - Vinyl Record
Over the weekend of August 21 and 22, 2010, not long after Richard Swift produced Damien Jurado's Saint Bartlett, the pair set up a 4-track recorder and a single ribbon microphone and spent two days recording other people's songs. Other People's Songs Vol. 1, issued on vinyl by Secretly Canadian, is the result.
The choices are wonderfully unpredictable. Bill Fay's "Be Not So Fearful" opens the record, Yes's "Sweetness" gets a gorgeous falsetto reading, and Kraftwerk's "Radioactivity" becomes a spaghetti-western shuffle. John Denver's "Follow Me" and Chubby Checker's "If the Sun Stops Shinin'" sit alongside them without a trace of irony.
It also captures the start of something bigger. The loose, warm sound they found that weekend became the blueprint for Jurado's Maraqopa less than two years later. A charming, intimate record from two musicians who clearly loved working together.
