Mutineer is the most homemade album Warren Zevon released, recorded largely by himself in 1995 with drum machines and cheap keyboards after his label situation collapsed. That roughness is exactly why it has aged so well. The title track is one of the finest songs he ever wrote and Bob Dylan started performing it live, which is about the highest recommendation available. Something Bad Happened To A Clown and Piano Fighter carry the gallows humor fans expect, while Similar To Rain shows a gentler side. Zevon later called this a favorite among his own records.
