Hammersmith Odeon, December 1984. Diamond Life had been out barely six months and had already carried a Soho jazz-funk band from London club nights to the international charts, and this recording finds Sade Adu and the group in theatres rather than arenas, still close enough to the audience for the arrangements to breathe.

What the tape shows is how much of that debut's atmosphere came from the players around the singer. Saxophone answers the vocal instead of decorating it, the rhythm section stays patient, and the songs sit a little looser than the studio versions. The band's take on Timmy Thomas's "Why Can't We Live Together" opens the first half and had already become theirs by this point in the tour.

This edition pairs the hand-numbered LP, limited to 500 copies, with a CD of the performance. The obi strip reads "Color Vinyl," but the record itself is BLACK. For anyone who wants Sade at the very beginning, before the polish set in.
