Brotherhood is the album where New Order split the difference between their two identities, and they did it literally. Released in 1986, the first side is guitar driven rock and the second is synthesizer dance music, which was a deliberate structural choice rather than an accident of sequencing. Bizarre Love Triangle sits on the electronic half and has become one of the most covered songs of the era. Paradise and Weirdo show how heavy Bernard Sumner's guitar could get, and Every Little Counts closes the record with a laugh in the vocal booth that they left in on purpose. Peter Hook's bass is as melodic here as anywhere in the catalog. This 2024 remaster is a genuine improvement, particularly in the drum machines.
