The Resistance is Muse at their most unapologetically ambitious. Released in 2009, it opens with the falsetto stomp of Uprising, moves through the Queen indebted drama of United States Of Eurasia, and closes with Exogenesis, a three part symphony with full orchestra that most bands would never attempt, let alone finish. Undisclosed Desires swaps guitars for slap bass and synths, which divided fans at the time and now sounds ahead of schedule. Matt Bellamy produced the album himself, and the maximalism is entirely deliberate. Across two LPs the orchestral passages get the dynamic range they need, and Exogenesis in particular benefits from being heard uninterrupted. A big, strange, sincere record from a band that never learned restraint.
