Puzzles Like You is Mojave 3's fifth and final album, and it sounds nothing like the band that made Ask Me Tomorrow. Released in 2006 on 4AD and reissued in 2026, it trades hushed country-folk for jangly Byrds-style guitars, uptempo Sixties pop melodies, and a bright, energetic feel closer to indie rock than anything the band had attempted before.
Neil Halstead largely finished the record on his own, but it ranks among the band's best work. "Most Days," "Big Star Baby," and Ian McCutcheon's "The Mutineer" are standouts that Halstead himself counts as favorites. "Truck Driving Man" opens with a burst of optimism, while "To Hold Your Tiny Toes" and "Just a Boy" carry a tenderness that balances the record's poppier moments.
A fitting farewell from a band that never stopped evolving. Part of 4AD's 2026 reissue series putting all five Mojave 3 albums back in print.
