When Slowdive dissolved in 1995, Neil Halstead, Rachel Goswell, and Ian McCutcheon traded walls of reverb for acoustic guitars and pedal steel. The result was Mojave 3 and their debut album, Ask Me Tomorrow, released on 4AD.
The record opens with "Love Songs on the Radio," a slow-burning highlight that sets the album's gentle, melancholic tone. Halstead and Goswell trade vocals across nine tracks of hushed folk and country-tinged pop, moving through the wistful "Sarah," the aching "You're Beautiful," and the quietly devastating "Where Is the Love." The album closes with "Mercy," one of the most understated and affecting songs in their catalog.
