Labi Siffre is best known to younger listeners because Eminem built My Name Is on a sample of I Got The, but his own albums deserve far more than footnote status. Crying Laughing Loving Lying, released in 1972, is a beautifully arranged folk soul record with a lightness of touch that makes the emotional weight sneak up on you. Siffre wrote plainly about love and about being a gay Black man in seventies Britain, decades before that was commercially safe. The playing is warm and unhurried, with acoustic guitar, strings and brass used sparingly. This 50th anniversary half speed master is a serious audiophile pressing of an album that rewards a quiet room and full attention. One of the great underappreciated British records.
