In The Court Of The Crimson King arrived in 1969 and effectively started progressive rock. The opening seconds of 21st Century Schizoid Man still sound violent, with distorted vocals and a unison sax and guitar line that lands like an alarm. From there the album swings wildly between the pastoral flute of I Talk To The Wind, the slow build of Epitaph and the mellotron cathedral of the title track. Robert Fripp, Ian McDonald and Greg Lake made a record with almost no precedent, and its influence runs from Yes and Genesis through metal and beyond. This 200 gram pressing handles the dynamic swings without compression, which matters enormously on Moonchild. Few debut albums have aged with this much authority.
