Kate Bush's Christmas special, titled simply Kate on screen, aired on the BBC on 28 December 1979. She was between records at the time, a year on from Lionheart and deep into sessions for Never for Ever, and riding the momentum of the Tour of Life, the run of shows she committed to after turning down an opening slot on Fleetwood Mac's Tusk tour.

What makes the broadcast worth hearing is how much of it exists nowhere else. "December Will Be Magic Again" is performed here nearly a year before its single release, "Ran Tan Waltz" and "The Wedding List" arrive in versions shaped for television, and Peter Gabriel appears for two duets, a reading of his own "Here Comes the Flood" and the Roy Harper song "Another Day." Alongside them sit "The Man with the Child in His Eyes" and "Egypt", so the set moves between the intimate and the theatrical the way her best shows did.

An unusual document from a period when Bush was rethinking what a performance could be. One for collectors who want the version of her that television caught and the studio never did.
