Hole's 1991 debut Pretty on the Inside returns on Pink Cloud vinyl as part of the RSD Essentials series, in a reissue overseen by founding guitarist Eric Erlandson and newly remastered for vinyl. Produced by Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth with Don Fleming, it is the rawest record Hole ever made: feedback, noise and punk fury built around Courtney Love's ferocious, unfiltered voice.
The original lineup of Love, Erlandson, Jill Emery and Caroline Rue tears through songs that still sound confrontational today. "Teenage Whore" opens with a snarl, "Babydoll" and "Garbadge Man" grind and lurch, and the title track and "Clouds" push the band into darker, more chaotic territory. It is the sound of the early 1990s underground before alternative rock went mainstream.
The soft pink colour makes a striking contrast with the abrasive music inside, and the original artwork has been carefully restored. An essential starting point for any Hole or riot-era collection.
