The Gaslight Anthem's American Slang is the sound of a New Jersey punk band growing into a full-blown rock and roll outfit, and it plays beautifully on vinyl.
Released on SideOneDummy in 2010, the band's third album followed the breakout success of The '59 Sound and was shaped by two years of near-constant touring. Brian Fallon's writing turned more personal and reflective here, his gravel-throated voice riding over tighter, punchier arrangements that blend punk urgency with the soul and heartland rock the band always wore on its sleeve. The title track, "Bring It On," "Orphans" and "The Queen of Lower Chelsea" are among the strongest songs in their catalog, and the closer "We Did It When We Were Young" lands as one of Fallon's most quietly affecting moments.
At ten songs and just over half an hour, it is a lean, no-filler record that rewards playing straight through.
Ideal for fans of Springsteen, Hot Water Music and Against Me!, and a natural companion to The '59 Sound. Pick up a copy for your shelf.
