Mr. Bad Guy is Freddie Mercury's only completed solo studio album, and it sounds nothing like Queen. Released in 1985 and recorded largely in Munich, it leans into synth pop, disco and Eurodance production, with drum machines where Roger Taylor would have been and layered keyboards in place of Brian May's guitar. I Was Born To Love You became a hit and later reappeared in Queen's catalog, while Living On My Own captures the loneliness underneath the excess with unusual candor. There's Nothing Like This and Made In Heaven show he never stopped writing melodies on a grand scale. This 40th anniversary transparent green vinyl pressing is the best the album has sounded. A fascinating listen for anyone who thought they knew his range.
