Fiddlehead's third album pulls the threads of the first two together and pushes harder. Since 2014 the Boston band have been welding hardcore energy to the anthemic melodies of 1990s alternative and the emotional directness of Revolution Summer era emo, and where Springtime and Blind and Between the Richness each circled grief from a different angle, Death is Nothing to Us reads like the culmination of that work.
Chris Teti returns behind the desk, and his production keeps the live-room punch while letting the guitars sound genuinely huge. The album runs a lean 27 minutes, held together by Pat Flynn's tuneful roar. Flynn, from Have Heart onward, has been one of the most thoughtful lyricists in hardcore, and here he threads Lucretius, Jean Amery, Bad Brains and the band's own back catalogue through songs about living alongside death. It observes pain honestly instead of prescribing a fix, and somehow comes out life-affirming.
