This Nation's Saving Grace, released in 1985, is widely regarded as one of the finest albums The Fall ever made. Produced by John Leckie with Mark E. Smith and Simon Rogers, it captures the Manchester band at a creative peak, with Brix Smith's guitar adding a melodic, 60s-tinged edge to their relentless, rattling post-punk.

Nothing was softened in the process. After the brief instrumental "Mansion," "Bombast" hurtles forward with real menace, "Spoilt Victorian Child" is all wiry tension, and "L.A." rides a hypnotic, looping groove. "I Am Damo Suzuki" pays tribute to Can and their Japanese-born singer, a nod to the krautrock influence running through the band's sound, while Smith's sardonic vocals prowl over everything. It is a record that sounds as strange and thrilling now as it did in 1985.

This remastered Beggars Banquet reissue is a must for post-punk collectors. Start with "Bombast" and turn it up.
