Early Day Miners built their name on slow, patient, layered post-rock, so The Treatment came as a real surprise. Released on Secretly Canadian in 2009 and produced by Paul Mahern, it is the Bloomington band's most upbeat and accessible record, the closest they came to making a pop album.
The atmosphere is still there, but insistent basslines, organs and clear melodies move to the front. "So Slowly" pairs a buoyant, Cure-like bassline with a wah-wah guitar solo worthy of Robert Fripp while keeping a lazy summer drift, and the centerpiece "How to Fall" carries a faint echo of "Sympathy for the Devil". Opener "In the Fire" sets the tone with an invitation to go out for the night, though the lyrics hint that things are less simple than they sound.
Personal, emotional and full of detail, it rewards close listening. A great find for fans of slowcore, shoegaze and the Secretly Canadian catalog.
