Perfect Strangers is the reunion nobody was sure would happen. Eight years after Deep Purple fell apart, the Mark II lineup of Gillan, Blackmore, Glover, Lord and Paice regrouped in 1984 and made a record that sounded deliberately grand rather than nostalgic. "Knocking At Your Back Door" opens with Lord's keyboards stalking in before Blackmore takes over, and the title track is built on one of the heaviest riffs the band ever committed to tape. It went platinum in America and proved the reunion was more than a payday.
This is the Japanese edition on Polydor K.K., catalogue 25MM-0401. Early Japanese copies shipped with an additional colour insert carrying photos and Japanese text. Polydor K.K. treated the reunion as an event, and the packaging shows it. The Japanese issue was cut for a market that expected quiet vinyl as standard, which suits an album this dependent on the space between Lord's organ and Blackmore's guitar.
