Wah!!! is the second album from Chinese American Bear, the Seattle duo of married couple Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten, released on Moshi Moshi. The title is the Chinese equivalent of "Wow!", used exactly the same way, and it sums up the mood of these eleven songs perfectly.
The pair wrote, produced and mixed the whole thing themselves in their home studio over 2022 and 2023, blending Mandarin pop with the Western indie pop canon and switching between English and Mandarin, sometimes mid-song. Expect melodic, sugar-rush arrangements with bits of psychedelia, doses of funk and a lot of lyrics about food. They have been described as The Flaming Lips, Dusty Springfield and The Beach Boys having a baby with a Care Bear, and that is not far off. "Yummy Yummy Yummy", "Pink Strawberries" and "Weekend In Chinatown" are pure joy.
A bright, funny, big-hearted record for anyone who likes their indie pop sweet.
