This is where it all started. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' self-titled debut EP is five tracks of raw, unfiltered New York energy recorded at Funhouse Recording Studio. Karen O's vocals swing between sultry, ferocious, and completely unhinged, while Nick Zinner's guitar and Brian Chase's drums lock into a tight, swaggering foundation underneath.
"Bang" kicks things off with a blast of noise-punk attitude that announces the band as a force from the first second. "Mystery Girl" is slinky and cool, "Art Star" is a two-minute burst of snotty no-wave brilliance, and "Miles Away" brings a surprisingly tender moment before "Our Time" closes the EP with all the swagger of a band that knows exactly what they are.
Originally self-released in 2001 on the band's own Shifty label and later reissued by Touch and Go Records, this EP quickly became one of the most celebrated debuts of the early 2000s New York rock revival. Fourteen minutes that changed everything.
