Formed in 1988 by Bradley Nowell, Eric Wilson, and Bud Gaugh, Sublime was an iconic alternative-rock/reggae-punk band from Long Beach, CA. Their single "Date Rape" from the album 40oz. to Freedom gained massive radio exposure, earning them a record deal with MCA and the release of 1994's experimental Robbin' the Hood. Sadly, Nowell died of a drug overdose in May 1996, before their eponymous third album came out. But, despite this tragedy, Sublime was still released in July, driven by the #1 alternative hit "What I Got" and other charting songs like "Santeria" and "Wrong Way." The album's massive success--over 6M copies sold--made it one of the most popular reggae-punk albums of all-time and led to 40 Oz. to Freedom going double-platinum and Robbin' the Hood going gold.
