Before Nirvana signed to a major, before grunge was a household word, Mudhoney released Superfuzz Bigmuff in 1988 and leveled everything in its path. This debut mini-LP on Sub Pop — named after the two fuzz pedals guitarist Steve Turner ran his guitar through — is the ground zero document of the Seattle sound. Blown-out fuzz, sarcastic swagger, and a complete disregard for polish: Superfuzz Bigmuff defined the template that an entire era of rock would copy.
The cornerstone cut In 'n' Out of Grace runs nearly eight minutes of pure fuzztone catharsis. Need and Chain the Door hit like sledgehammers in under two minutes. Kurt Cobain cited this record as a primary influence. Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Pixies fans will immediately understand why.
