Nestled in a charming barn-turned-studio in rural Ontario, the seven tracks that make up Viet Cong were primarily created on the go, as Flegel and his talented bandmates, Mike Wallace, Scott Munro, and Daniel Christiansen, set off on an incredible 50-date tour that pushed them to their limits. Although the close quarters brought about some exhaustion, they also helped them bond and grow together as a band. While you might label some records as seasonal, you can definitely sense the wistfulness in Viet Cong, hinting at the chill of winter. Yet, remember that a frost needs something warmer beneath it to form. So yes, Viet Cong can be seen as a winter album, but it transforms beautifully into a vibrant spring record, then becomes a sultry summer scorcher, shifts into an autumn vibe, and eventually, it might just freeze over again.
