Upstairs At Eric's is one of the great synth pop debuts, and it was made by a duo that barely lasted two albums. Vince Clarke left Depeche Mode, answered a magazine advertisement, and found Alison Moyet, whose blues informed voice turned out to be the perfect counterweight to his sequencers. Only You and Don't Go pull in opposite directions, one a fragile ballad and the other a dance floor demand, and both became standards. Situation remains a club staple decades later. The album also makes room for tape experiments and oddities that stop it becoming a singles collection. Released in 1982, the production still sounds precise and cold in the best way. This ultra clear vinyl pressing gives the synth bass real definition.
