Verve, The - Voyager 1 - Vinyl Record
Voyager 1 is one of the strangest and most sought-after items in The Verve's catalogue: an official, band-approved live recording dressed up to look like a pirate release, right down to its catalogue number, Jolly Roger 2. It was made to introduce the band, then still billed simply as Verve, to America through Virgin's new indie imprint Vernon Yard, and it arrived ahead of their 1993 debut A Storm in Heaven.
The six songs were recorded in concert in London and New York during 1992. "Gravity Grave" and "She's a Superstar" sound rougher and heavier than their studio versions, while "Slide Away", "One Way to Go" and "Already There" stretch out into swirling psychedelia built on Nick McCabe's guitar. "South Pacific" stayed unreleased in studio form for more than 20 years.
The original run was limited to 1,000 copies, and legend has it several hundred were damaged in transit. This Record Store Day 2025 reissue was mastered from the original analogue sources, with lacquers cut by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road Studios. An easy yes for shoegaze and Britpop collectors.
