Carrie & Lowell is the album Sufjan Stevens made after his mother died, named for her and for the stepfather who became his label partner. Following the maximalism of The Age of Adz, he stripped everything back to fingerpicked guitar, banjo, close-miked voice and a few washes of electronics, recorded largely on headphones in hotel rooms and apartments rather than a studio.
The restraint is what makes it land. "Death with Dignity" opens with the plainest possible admission of not knowing where to begin, "Fourth of July" turns a deathbed conversation into a refrain nobody who has heard it forgets, and "Eugene" and "John My Beloved" move between childhood memory and religious doubt without ever raising their voice. Grief here is specific: swimming lessons, an Oregon summer, a hospital room.
Ten years on it remains the record people hand to friends who need it. Play it in one sitting, with the lights low.
