Released in 1994, Superunknown is the record where Soundgarden pushed past grunge and into something heavier and stranger. Chris Cornell's vocals move from a whisper to a howl, Kim Thayil's guitar work bends into psychedelic territory, and the rhythm section holds it all together through odd time signatures and drop tunings. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman became radio staples, but the deep cuts are where the album earns its reputation. Fell On Black Days and 4th Of July are as dark and patient as anything in the era. This 2LP pressing gives the album the room it needs, spreading the running time across four sides for better dynamics and less inner groove distortion. A cornerstone of any nineties rock shelf, and one that rewards repeat spins on a good system.
