Substance is arguably the best singles collection any band has assembled, largely because New Order rerecorded and extended much of it specifically for the format. Released in 1987, it collects the twelve inch versions of everything from Ceremony through True Faith, which means Blue Monday appears in its full seven and a half minute form rather than the edit. Hearing the progression from the Joy Division adjacent guitars of the early singles to the sequencer driven dance music of Bizarre Love Triangle in one sitting is the clearest explanation of what the band actually did to popular music. This 2023 reissue across two LPs gives those extended mixes the low end they were built for. The single best entry point into the catalog.
