It took until 2022 for Louis Armstrong to get a Christmas album of his own. Louis Wishes You a Cool Yule, issued by Verve, gathers the holiday sides he cut across his career into one record, and it is a far warmer listen than most seasonal compilations.
The swing numbers carry the day: the title track, "Zat You Santa Claus?" and "Christmas Night in Harlem" are pure Satchmo, horn bright and vocals grinning. Ella Fitzgerald joins him for "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm," Velma Middleton trades lines on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," and "What a Wonderful World" sits naturally among them.
The closer is the reason collectors want it: a previously unheard recording of Louis reading "A Visit from St. Nicholas," with New Orleans pianist Sullivan Fortner adding a gentle new accompaniment underneath.
A holiday record worth pulling out every December.
