Bark Your Head Off, Dog is Hop Along's third full-length and their most dynamic, textured record. Released by Saddle Creek in 2018, it was self-produced by the band and recorded at The Headroom in Philadelphia with guitarist Joe Reinhart and Kyle Pulley. Grunge, folk, punk and power pop all surface here, with nods to everything from ELO to Elvis Costello to 1970s girl group vocal arrangements.
This time the Philadelphia band added strings, more intricate rhythms and lush harmonies, with Thin Lips' Chrissy Tashjian joining on vocals. Frances Quinlan's voice remains the main event, shifting from a whisper to a raw, cracking howl within a single line. "How Simple" opens with an irresistible rush, "How You Got Your Limp" and "One That Suits Me" twist and turn in unexpected directions, and "Prior Things" closes the album on a sweeping, string-laden high.
Deliberate, balanced and endlessly rewarding, it is the sound of a band at its strongest. Essential for fans of literate, adventurous indie rock.
