France Gall - Baby Pop - Vinyl Record

France Gall was one of the defining voices of ye-ye, the French pop movement that took the beat music of the Beatles and the Hollies and rebuilt it around young women singing about their own lives. In postwar France that was its own small revolution, and Gall, barely out of her teens, was at the center of it.

Baby Pop, from 1966, is where she grows up. The arrangements get stranger and richer, the subject matter darkens, and the title track, written by Serge Gainsbourg, spends three minutes telling a girl she will get old and die while the band plays one of the most infectious hooks of the decade. Gainsbourg also supplied Attends Ou Va-T'en. Elsewhere there is the Farfisa driven Faut-Il Que Je T'aime and the gleefully silly L'Amerique.

It sits in her catalog roughly where Revolver and Pet Sounds sit in 1966: the moment a pop form realizes how far it can go. This is part of Third Man's series of first authorized North American vinyl pressings of Gall's albums.
