Elliott Smith's From a Basement on the Hill gets the care it always deserved on this 20th anniversary 2LP reissue from Kill Rock Stars, housed in a deluxe mirror-board gatefold jacket.

Released in 2004, a year after Smith's death, the album was assembled from the sessions he left behind and became the highest-charting release of his career. It is a looser, heavier and more psychedelic record than anything before it, with fuzzed-out guitars and hazy layered vocals pulling from the late-60s sounds he loved, yet songs like "Twilight," "Pretty (Ugly Before)" and "A Fond Farewell" keep the hushed, devastating intimacy that defined his writing.

For this edition, new digital transfers were made from the original quarter-inch tape mixes by Rob Schnapf and Joanna Bolme, then remastered by Smith's official archival team, Larry Crane and Adam Gonsalves at Telegraph Mastering. Spread across two discs, the album has room to breathe in a way the original never quite did.

An essential piece for fans of Smith's catalog and of 2000s indie songwriting. A beautiful copy to keep on the shelf.
