Narrow Stairs is the album where Death Cab for Cutie stopped smoothing the edges. Recorded largely live in the room with Chris Walla producing, it opens with Ben Gibbard following Jack Kerouac to Bixby Canyon and then hands over eight minutes to "I Will Possess Your Heart", a bass riff that circles for half the song before a word is sung. It was an unlikely radio hit and it set the tone: darker, looser, more willing to sit in discomfort. "Cath..." and "Grapevine Fires" still carry the melodic instinct fans came for, while "The Ice Is Getting Thinner" closes things about as bleakly as this band gets. Released on Barsuk in 2008 and Grammy nominated, it is the record longtime listeners tend to name first. Pressed on 180 gram black vinyl in the die-cut sleeve. A strong addition to any indie rock shelf.
