Mixed Up was born out of the momentum — and the tension — that followed The Cure's triumphant 1989 album Disintegration and its global Prayer Tour. Rather than rush into another studio album, Robert Smith took a different path: curating an album of the band's rarer 12" mixes, then pushing the concept further when Brian 'Chuck' New's dub-style remix of "Pictures of You" inspired him to raise the bar. "That mix turned the music on its head, but left the essential heart of the song intact," Smith says. "My revised ambition was to compile an album that was contemporary without being dated, immediate without being obvious, musically inspiring, rhythmically exciting and sonically great!"

Two tracks — "A Forest" and "The Walk" — were entirely re-recorded with producer Mark Saunders after the original multi-track tapes were lost, reconstructed using original instruments and gear. The result is a greatest-hits collection from an alternate universe, crowned by the inclusion of "Never Enough," which topped Billboard's Modern Rock chart for three weeks. Essential for any Cure fan's vinyl collection.
