Chieftains - Chronicles: 60 Years Of The Chieftains - 180g 2LP Vinyl Record
Founded in Dublin in 1962 around piper Paddy Moloney, The Chieftains carried traditional Irish music to concert halls around the world, winning six Grammy Awards along the way. Chronicles: 60 Years Of The Chieftains, released by their original home, Claddagh Records, in 2021, gathers the whole story onto two 180-gram LPs.
The set runs from their 1964 debut, Chieftains 1, through 2012's Voice Of Ages, with Claddagh recordings remastered from the original quarter-inch tapes. It also shows why so many musicians wanted to play with them: The Rolling Stones on "The Rocky Road To Dublin", Van Morrison on a live "Star Of The County Down", Sinéad O'Connor on "The Foggy Dew", Alison Krauss, Bon Iver, Imelda May, Lisa Hannigan, Paolo Nutini and Diana Krall all join in. Live recordings from Massey Hall in 1976 and a 1981 BBC session at the Cambridge Folk Festival show the band's force on stage, and nine of these recordings appear on vinyl here for the first time.
A rich introduction for newcomers and a rewarding set for longtime fans of Irish and folk music.
