Calexico's Carried to Dust is the Tucson band's most cinematic and globally-minded album — a sweeping record that blends desert rock, mariachi brass, Southwestern folk, and post-rock dynamics into a sound as vast and sun-scorched as the borderlands that inspire it. Joey Burns and John Convertino have always drawn from the musical traditions of the American Southwest and Northern Mexico, and this 2008 album is their richest exploration of that territory.
"Victor Jara's Hands" pays tribute to the Chilean folk legend over a gentle bolero rhythm, "Two Silver Trees" shimmers with pedal steel and trumpet, and "Red Blooms" builds from a quiet acoustic opening to a full-band crescendo that captures the dramatic landscapes of the Sonoran Desert. Guest appearances from Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) and members of Arcade Fire add depth to an already layered record. Pressed on translucent red vinyl.
