Locust Abortion Technician, first released in 1987, is the Butthole Surfers at their most unhinged and inspired. The Texas band made it largely on their own equipment rather than in a conventional studio, and the homemade approach only sharpened their taste for chaos: tape manipulation, warped vocals, sludgy riffs and sudden lurches into something almost pretty.
Sweat Loaf opens the record with a crushed and twisted nod to Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf, Human Cannonball is a lurching, heavy rocker, and 22 Going on 23 closes things out with an eerie, unsettling sound collage. It is psychedelic noise rock that influenced a generation of underground bands, and it still sounds like nothing else.
This 2024 remaster from Matador gives a notoriously murky record new clarity without sanding off its edges, part of Matador's reissue series of the band's classic albums. Essential listening for fans of eighties American underground rock and anyone who likes their records a little dangerous.
