A Study Of Losses is the seventh Beirut album, and the largest thing Zach Condon has ever made. It started in spring 2023 when Viktoria Dalborg of the Swedish circus Kompani Giraff asked him to score a show adapted from Judith Schalansky's book about loss and impermanence, from extinct animals and vanished buildings to the quieter erosions of getting older. Eighteen songs and close to an hour later, the result is chamber pop at its most patient: brass and choral harmony, instrumental interludes named for the lunar seas, and vocal writing as tender as early church music. Caspian Tiger is the emotional centre, cinematic and plainly worded, mourning something enormous in a way that could just as easily be about a friend. This pressing is transparent blue vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with a laser etched fourth side. Worth hearing in one sitting.
