Beach House's second album Devotion is where the Baltimore duo's dream pop found its shape. Victoria Legrand's organ and low, smoky vocals sit against Alex Scally's slide guitar, and the whole record moves at the pace of a held breath: "Gila" and "Heart of Chambers" build slowly and never break, while their cover of Daniel Johnston's "Some Things Last a Long Time" is one of the most quietly devastating things in their catalogue. Originally released in 2008, it was made cheaply and sounds nothing like it, all warm haze and space. This is the double LP edition, which spreads the album across four sides so the quiet passages stay quiet and the low end keeps its body. Essential for anyone who came to the band through Teen Dream or Bloom and wants to hear where the sound started. A record best played late and loud enough to disappear into.
